Our team at the Innovation Centre (CIC) have been busy making child-friendly face visors for schools across west Wales in readiness for pupils’ return on June 29.

Visors designed by CIC

Lock down has meant that our Innovation Centre staff have been unable to work on their regular projects so they have used their skills and equipment to produce face visors to help others. Over the past couple of months the team have made 5000 visors for nursing homes, businesses and schools in the Swansea and Carmarthen areas.

The team, led by Dr Ross Head, have been working long hours laser cutting and assembling these vital face visors to help address any gaps in the supply of PPE. Their latest project has been to supply schools with child friendly face visors.

Dr Head said: “I have been really happy to be involved in making visors to help the care sector, businesses and schools. It has helped give people confidence in returning to work and it has been great to be doing something that makes a difference to people’s lives. With great thanks to my small but dedicated team who have made this possible, and especially to Brogan Evans who designed the beautiful graphics to make child friendly visors, which should be much less intimidating to children as they begin to venture out.”

The child-friendly visors have been delivered to Dunvant, Cila, Waunarlwydd and Bishopston primaries, as well as Bishop Gore and Pentrehafod Comprehensives and feature artwork by former UWTSD Graphic Design student Brogan Evans. The team is also planning to send 600 visors to Carmarthen to help businesses plan for re-opening.

Brogan said: “It was such a pleasure to be asked to help the wonderful team at UWTSD. They are doing such a kind, selfless task and I am just thrilled I could help. I have been so grateful watching the key workers work tirelessly to help everybody for months and as a designer / illustrator I have felt a bit useless sat in my studio. I feel very lucky that I have been able to help make important protective equipment a little less scary for young children.”

CIC have been working in partnership with the team at the University of Wales Trinity St David Swansea College of Art, using their equipment and volunteer staff.

The team are now working on making another 2,000 visors to help keep children safe as schools reopen in September. Visit our campaign page to find out more about the project and donate or request visors for your child’s school.

Thank you for your enquiry into the visors. We’re glad you like them, and think they would be useful to you.
The first batch have all be sent out to help shops, businesses and schools, but we are looking into how we can make more and make them available to you. We are hopeful that we can achieve this during the summer and before children return to school in September. I have passed your email address on to the CIC and someone will be in touch with you when we know more. If the CIC can help you in the meantime please get in touch with them on using the CIC contact form.

  1. We would love some of these for the little children in our pre-school setting. As we are due to open back up on Monday 29th June.
