Systems Generated Trauma: when asking for help causes harm

Our new report reveals a widespread pattern of ‘Systems Generated Trauma’ and calls for urgent action to redesign public services that are meant to support, not break, the most vulnerable families.

Mum and daughter hugging with an overlay of words

Systems Generated Trauma is the harm caused by the policies and practices of the public services that disabled children and their families are forced to navigate. While often unintentional, this harm stems from deep-rooted problems that turn the act of seeking help into an ordeal.

The parents we spoke to told us that instead of receiving help, they face a relentless, hostile, and bureaucratic fight for basic support. They are met with disbelief, repeated assessments, and processes that leave them feeling blamed or broken.

This report is a call to action. It demands accountability. It demands change. We must be brave enough to confront the truth, and bold enough to act.

Asking for help should never cause harm—it’s time to put a stop to Systems Generated Trauma.

Just a devastating process on top of an already difficult life, with no sleep and no outside family help. Not something I would enter lightly in to ever again.

I am completely traumatised so are the children. Just the thought of engaging with social care gives me a panic attack where I really feel like I am going to die.

Total distrust of all professionals. Afraid to seek medical advice or treatment for any of the family. Living with the lasting impact of what this has done to our family.
