Transforming fire safety education through pioneering sensory boards that break down barriers to learning for children with Additional Learning Needs
In partnership with the Fire Service’s Community Safety Education Team, CIC developed Wales’ first Educational Fire Safety Sensory Boards, making vital fire safety education accessible for children and young people with Additional Learning Needs (ALN). Designed and prototyped in Swansea, the interactive boards use sensory elements such as alarms, radios, torches, mobile phones, and firefighter PPE to engage children with autism, communication difficulties, and other complex needs. Following successful trials in special schools, autistic units, and mainstream settings, educators have reported outstanding engagement, particularly among pupils who struggle with traditional teaching methods.
The project demonstrates how innovative, inclusive design can improve learning, increase safety awareness, and help create safer futures for children with additional needs.
We are rolling out the Fire Safety Sensory Boards across 10 special schools in Wales, each with an average of around 140 pupils. This rollout will directly benefit approximately 1,400 children with Additional Learning Needs, providing them with accessible, hands-on fire safety education.
