“Our son is a wonderful energetic and cheerful child. He loves dancing, unicorns and Korean pop music as well as playing with his best friend at school.

He has DCD and sensory processing issues which affects him daily in terms of his physical co-ordination and fine motor skills. He struggles with tasks his peers can do more easily such as using cutlery, getting dressed and handwriting, but also his condition affects his executive functioning and emotional regulation too. We are learning gradually how to help and support him through reading and learning from trusted services and charities. There’s not a huge amount of information and research out there for DCD but we look for it where we can.

I heard about the Cerebra’s Library Service in a SEND parents WhatsApp group, and it came just at the right time in the run up to our son’s diagnosis. I ordered two children’s books about dyspraxia.
The timing of these books arriving couldn’t have been more poignant as they came through the post the week before my son’s final diagnosis assessment was due.

Reading the books with him helped me find the right words to explain his diagnosis and allowed him to understand the reasons why he had struggled for so long. Instead of labelling himself as “stupid” or “clumsy” he now uses the term dyspraxia to explain to others why we might find some things difficult, and to ask for help when he needs it instead of becoming frustrated or feeling ashamed.

This library is a wonderful service and I can’t wait to order more books to help myself understand my sons condition more, and to use in facilitating discussions with other family members too. Thank you for providing this Cerebra”.

Our specialist Library has lots of books and toys to discover. Find out more here.
