Families raising children with brain conditions now have a new source of support and guidance: The Calm in the Complicated, a six episode video podcast from UK charity Cerebra. Hosted by Dr Carrie Grant MBE, broadcaster, author and neurodiversity advocate, and Dr Samantha Flynn, a University of Warwick researcher specialising in autism and learning disabilities, the series brings together lived experience and expert insight.
The podcast offers a welcoming, honest, and uplifting space where families can feel seen, understood, and supported, whether they’re seeking practical tips, expert insight, or simply reassurance that they are not alone.
Crucially, the entire series has been shaped by families themselves. Cerebra asked parent carers which topics they most wanted covered, enabling the team to select the six themes that matter most.
Families also chose the podcast’s name, ensuring it reflects their experiences and needs. Each episode includes voice notes from parent carers across the UK, ensuring their voices are heard directly. This is a podcast made with families, not just for them.
Created to offer practical support and meaningful insights for both parent carers and professionals, the series blends real life experience with expert knowledge in an accessible, engaging format.
Jess Camburn-Rahmani, Cerebra CEO said:
“Through this podcast, we want families to feel connected and understood. Whether listeners learn something new, find answers to their questions, or simply feel less alone, our hope is that each episode provides genuine support and guidance.”
Each episode features open, honest conversations that don’t shy away from difficult topics. Parents from across the UK share their experiences, the challenges they’ve overcome, the hurdles they’re still navigating, and the moments of joy that keep them going.
Carrie and Sam are joined by professionals ranging from sleep practitioners to disability researchers, as well as parents turned campaigners including David Grant MBE and Rachel Wright of the Born at the Right Time charity.
Host Dr Carrie Grant MBE said:
“I loved doing this series. It has everything from day one of diagnosis to parent burnout, we discuss the topics on the hearts of the SEND community. We had such valuable chats.”
Host Dr Samantha Flynn added:
“They say it takes a village to raise a child, but that village is hard to come by for many of us. The Calm in the Complicated is our virtual village – a space of understanding, compassion, and support for everyone navigating the challenges of raising children with brain conditions.”
