A new guide to co-production in research had been launched by Warwick University. It focuses on co-producing research with family carers of people with a learning disability. Much of the guidance will also apply to a broader range of co-production scenarios.

The guide, which itself has been co-produced with family carers, brings together insights and experience to equip researchers and family carers with knowledge of best practice in co production.

The new guide is based on seven golden rules. These include; working together as peers; offering flexibility and paying appropriately for people’s time. Guidance is also given on discussing sensitive topics and supporting contributor’s wellbeing during research projects.

Dr Jo Griffin, Warwick University said:  “All too often co-production can be a secondary thought in designing research. We believe this is the first guide of its kind taking an in-depth look at what is needed to enable meaningful co-production that ultimately creates change. By working with family carers of people with a learning disability we have been able to co-produce the guide from start to finish, knowing the content is rooted in lived experience.”

Sharon Foxwell, one of the family carers who worked on the guide said: “As family carers, we are often invited to take part in research but sometimes it can be hard to know what our expectations should be. This guide aims to empower and equip family carers with the knowledge to confidently ask questions about projects and what their involvement would look like. It also provides information to support them during the project itself.”

The free guide is available for everyone to access at Co-producing research (warwick.ac.uk).
