How our Sleep Service offered advice and support to help Oliver sleep through the night.

“Our 5 year old son Oliver loves his food and the Cars films – he is obsessed with Lightning McQueen.

Oliver has ASD, GDD and anxiety. He is also minimally verbal, so he doesn’t communicate his needs verbally. His ASD has had a massive effect on his sleep and as such no one in the house was sleeping fully.

We asked Cerebra’s Sleep Service for help on what to do with different scenarios such as routine, what to do when he wakes up and stays awake in the night. As time went on, we talked further and other concerns/issues came up that needed to be addressed.

Our Sleep Practitioner was able to offer advice, support, literature, written letters to family members so they are on the same page. As other issues occurred, such as sensory needs, he told me about books that could help him from Cerebra’s Library Service, and they inevitably did.

Oliver is now sleeping all the way through 4-5 nights a week whereas before he would only sleep once through simply because he was so exhausted from the lack of sleep on the other nights. Following the advice we had from Cerebra we are also teaching Oliver how to settle himself/play by himself if he does choose to wake up and stay awake. He now does this and then puts himself back to sleep when he is ready.

The advice from Cerebra was invaluable and has definitely helped not just Oliver to sleep more, but the whole family”.
