The Law Commission has published an important consultation paper on disabled children’s social care law in England.  The Commission has been looking at the current legal framework for getting help from social services and how it can be made fairer, simpler and more up to date.

The Commission is inviting young people and families to express their views on its findings and recommendations. This is an important opportunity to have your say on what needs to be done to fix social care for disabled children, so we’re encouraging families to respond to the consultation paper.

The deadline for responding to the consultation is 20 January 2025.  You can read the full consultation paper here. A shorter summary is available here and an Easy Read version here. Large print and audio versions of the summary are also available on the project web page. There is also a draft impact assessment. You can respond using this online form.

You don’t need to answer all the questions if you’re only interested in some aspects of the consultation.

Our LEaP team was invited to meetings with the Law Commission in the run-up to this consultation paper, to explain what we think is wrong with the current system and what needs to change. We’ll be looking closely at the consultation paper and sharing our experience of supporting families who struggle to get the social care they need.

You can learn more about the background to this consultation on the Law Commission website and in this Special Needs Jungle article.
