School Transport in England

A guide for parents

This guide explains the legal obligations on local authorities to provide free school transport for disabled children in England. Our aim is to help parents and carers understand their legal rights, but this guide is not intended to be legal advice and it should not be relied on as such. The law relating to school transport can be complicated and you may need to take independent legal advice to find out how the law applies to your particular circumstances.

We would like to thank the National Lottery Community Fund for providing us with funding to update this guide.

The Government has recently issued revised statutory guidance for school transport. We are in the process of analysing the new guidance and updating our guide. If you require individual help on school transport you can complete our LEaP request form and we will assess your request. This guide was updated in June 2021. The information was correct at the time of writing.
