‘Happy Snaps’ is inspired by the writer’s brother’s real life story. He grew up with cerebral palsy and spent his adolescence in and out of hospital with various health complications. He had brilliant friends who were there for him when his condition became more severe, and when he needed to move away to a school which would support his disability. ‘Happy Snaps’ is inspired by his childhood and those close, meaningful friendships.
Gabriel and his best friend Sami have lived a few streets away from each other on the Isle of Sheppey for all of their lives. But on one of the last days of summer, there’s an inescapable change looming over their friendship. The two boys try to enjoy a special last day together in each other’s company, running off to their caravan hideout and washing cars for pocket money. The whole day’s adventures are captured by Gabriel on an old disposable camera he’s found. But both boys at times seem unable to connect with each other, struggling to confront the magnitude of the changes to come. As the day goes on, the cocoon they’ve made for themselves becomes increasingly fragile, with family and friends asking questions about what the future will bring.
Gabriel has grown up on the Isle of Sheppey and is a well-loved member of the tight-knit community – he’s warm, thoughtful and approachable. Growing up with a disability made him brave.
This is a paid project that will be filming on the Isle of Sheppey. All travel & accommodation will be paid for.
