Mum Annmarie explains how Cerebra’s sensory toy library is helping her family.

A selection of toys available from cerebra's lending library

Our specialist postal library contains a wide range of books for both adults and children and a selection of toys specially chosen for children with brain conditions. It’s a great way to try out what sensory toys your child enjoys the most without buying what can be very expensive items.

One mum, Annmarie, told us how our library has helped her son, Harrison:

“Harrison is eight years old and finds it hard to sit still and focus as he doesn’t have a brilliant concentration span. He often prefers his own company and can show challenging and sometimes dangerous behaviours. Although he can talk, he has very limited understanding. Harrison has ASD, ADHD, Sensory Processing Disorder and learning disabilities.

“We thought that Harrison might benefit from playing with sensory toys but the ones we wanted were far too expensive for us to buy only to find that Harrison didn’t like them. We were thrilled to find Cerebra’s toy library and Harrison loves it when we receive a new box of toys to try”.

Our toy library has a variety of sensory toys for all sorts of different needs. Whether your child is sensory seeking or sensory sensitive we have a kit that’s suitable. If they’re learning about cause and effect or have limited mobility, one of our switch toys could be just the thing for them.

We also have soft play toys and communication aids. Your child could discover a new favourite sound, sight, smell or way to play with one of our toys.

You can view and download a full list of the toys you can borrow here.

You can borrow one item at a time for 28 days. They are delivered and collected by courier, which we arrange for you. Our service is free for anyone in the UK caring for a child with a brain condition and is easy to use.

  1. Hi,
I am an Occupational Therapist working with a child who has just started using switch toys.
Please can you let me know if you loan out switches and switch toys? Or if you know of another service who does this?

    Thank you for your help,
    Mandy

    1. Yes, we have switch toys in the library. If the child is aged 16 or under we would be able to make the parent a library member to borrow the switch toys. We lend them out one at a time for 28 days at a time, it is free of charge and we cover anywhere in the UK. The list of switch toys that we have are on page 5 of our toy list. There may be a wait to borrow the toys of between 3 and 12 weeks, depending on the popularity of the toy. Parents can join the library by completing the webform on the library page of our website.

  2. Hi it’s a lovely idea who thought of this sort of library.
My daughter is 16. I don’t know if she will benefit from this library.
    Please let me know.
    My daughter has down syndrome

    1. Hi Shaista, we can take people up to the child’s 17th birthday. We definitely include children with Down Syndrome. It’s free of charge and we organise delivery and collection of sensory items. If you wish to join, you can complete this webform.
