Free lunchtime webinar: Thursday 11th July 12.30pm-2.00pm

Sleep problems present a significant challenge for parents and carers of children with intellectual disability. Poor sleep can affect every aspect of a child’s functioning and has negative consequences for the whole family. In this webinar, we will consider what sleep is, why sleep problems can occur more often in children with genetic syndromes associated with intellectual disability, and how to improve sleep.

Speaker programme:

  • Professor Caroline Richards, from the University of Birmingham will present research findings regarding the prevalence and profile of sleep problems in children with genetic syndromes associated with intellectual disability. She will highlight some of the potential causes of sleep problems and opportunities to improve sleep.
  • Leeann Stevenson is Communications Manager for the Smith Magenis Syndrome Foundation UK. Leeann’s daughter has a diagnosis of Smith Magenis syndrome which is a rare genetic syndrome associated with severe sleep disruption. Leeann will talk about her experiences of sleep difficulties with their family and share some of the strategies that they have found helpful.

The event will be held on Zoom.
