Mum Louise introduces us to her daughter Faith and explains how borrowing a Fidget Kit from our Toy Library has helped meet some of her sensory needs.
“Faith is 5 years old and loves creative play and regularly does role playing with her teddies and dolls. Faith is also very hyperactive and likes any activities that involve movement such as her trampoline at home. Faith is sensory seeking and loves playing with air dry clay, playdoh and doing arts and craft activities. She struggles with loud, busy environments and struggles in settings such as children parties and play-gyms.
Faith can very easily become dysregulated and this then leads to meltdowns where Faith is mostly verbally abusive towards myself and her father. Faith also suffers with anxiety and for over a year now she has been resistant to going out of the house on weekends, school holidays etc. This can affect both mine and Faiths dad’s wellbeing at points as it can be both physically and emotionally draining dealing with Faiths hyperactivity and meltdowns.
Faith has recently been assessed and diagnosed as having ASC, and in the psychologists report she was referred to as a ‘sensory seeker’. I got in touch with Cerebra’s Toy Library for some help finding toys to suit her. The Librarian was great at advising me on the different toys available and I decided that Faith would benefit from borrowing a Fidget Kit.
Borrowing the kit has made a big difference to our family. We have wasted money buying toys for Faith we have believed she would like, only for her to have no interest in them. The concept of loaning different toys out for children and families to try at home is a great idea as it means parents/carers can evaluate whether their child would enjoy and benefit from them before purchasing them. Faith loved the Fidget Kit so much that I put one together for her as a Christmas present”.
