We are deeply concerned that the Government is proposing to tighten the eligibility criteria for personal independence payments (PIP). According to media reports, the Government will be seeking to raise the threshold in an announcement tomorrow. Any raising of the threshold will cause increased hardship for disabled young people and adults, and their families. We urge the Government to think again and scrap its plans. It appears that proposals for a real-terms cut to the rate of PIP have been dropped following intense opposition by Labour MPs, which we welcome. While many young people and adults who receive PIP want to work, there are some who simply are not able to do so. Raising the threshold will counteract the Government’s stated objective by creating additional barriers into work for those who are able to do so and will punish those who cannot. While the Government may save money in the short term on the benefits bill, it will do so by putting many disabled young people and adults further below the poverty line.
